What Is a GK Horizontal Scraper Centrifuge?

The horizontal scraper centrifuge is an automatic batch filter centrifuge built on a horizontal shaft, in which feeding, filtration, washing, spin-drying and cake discharge all happen while the basket keeps turning at full speed. Because the basket never has to stop or slow down between the steps, a cycle is very short and one machine can handle a large tonnage. The cake is cut off the basket wall by a scraper and pushed axially out of the discharge end. That combination — high throughput with a short, sealed cycle — makes the horizontal scraper centrifuge a standard machine in starch, PVC and chlor-alkali plants.

Working Principle

1) Full-speed feed. Slurry enters through a feed pipe and is spread across the basket while it turns at full speed, so solids lay down evenly. 2) Filtration. Liquid passes through the filter medium and is collected in the casing; a uniform cake forms. 3) Washing. Wash liquid is distributed over the cake at full speed to displace mother liquor. 4) Spin-dry. Filtration continues until the cake reaches the required residual moisture. 5) Discharge. The scraper advances and the cake is pushed out of the discharge end, still at full speed. 6) Repeat. The cycle restarts immediately, which is why cycle times are measured in tens of seconds rather than minutes.

Key Features

No speed changes in the cycle — feeding, washing and discharge all run at full speed, so each batch is short and output per machine is high.

Axial scraper discharge — the scraper pushes the cake out of the end of the basket, so the discharge area stays clear and blockage is rare.

High separation factor — a relatively small basket turning fast gives strong dewatering on fine solids.

Sealed and safe — closed casing with optional inert-gas blanketing for solvent-wet or dusty products.

Low vibration — horizontal shaft with a rigid bearing arrangement and over-damped support.

Wear protection options — hardened scraper, ceramic or tungsten-carbide wear tiles on the discharge path for abrasive products.

Typical Applications

The GK horizontal scraper centrifuge is chosen where a plant must dewater a large tonnage of fine solids in a compact, sealed machine and cannot afford long cycle times:

  • corn starch· cassava starch· potato starch· PVC resin· caustic soda· sodium sulfate· citric acid· gypsum and inorganic salts

Selection Guide

Horizontal and vertical scraper machines both cut the cake with a scraper, but they differ in how the cycle runs and where the cake leaves:

Choose the GK horizontal scraper centrifuge when you need high tonnage of fine-solids dewatering in a sealed machine with short cycles. Where the solids are crystals that must stay intact, a screen scroll machine is the better fit.

FAQ

Why does the basket not slow down between steps?

Every step is carried out at full speed by switching what is fed to the machine rather than by changing the basket speed. That removes the acceleration and deceleration time that dominates a conventional cycle, which is why a GK machine achieves a much higher throughput for the same basket size.

What is the difference between GK and a vertical scraper centrifuge?

Both cut the cake with a scraper. A horizontal machine discharges axially out of the end of the basket and keeps full speed throughout the cycle; a vertical machine discharges downward through the base and typically changes speed between steps. Horizontal wins on tonnage; vertical wins on room-height installations and clean-room compatibility.

What residual moisture can it reach?

For starch and PVC resin, typically 25–38% depending on the product and the spin-dry time; for crystalline inorganic salts, much lower. The cycle is adjusted to your moisture target and confirmed on a test machine.

Can it handle abrasive products?

Yes, with the abrasion package: a hardened scraper with a replaceable tip and ceramic or tungsten-carbide tiles along the discharge path. On abrasive duty those components are treated as planned consumables and supplied as stock parts.

How much operator attention does it need?

Very little. The PLC runs feed, wash, spin-dry and discharge as a stored recipe. The operator mainly checks that the feed is consistent and that the discharge conveyor is clear.

Why Jiangsu Shengli Centrifuge

Behind this machine is Jiangsu Shengli Centrifuge Manufacturing Co., Ltd.: a 158,905 m2 manufacturing plant, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certification, CE marking, more than 30 patents and installations in over 30 countries. Rotor balancing, wear-facing and final testing are done in house, so the machine that arrives on site is the machine that was measured on the balancing machine, and the report to prove it travels with it.
