What Is a Direct Drive Explosion-Proof Centrifuge?

A direct drive centrifuge couples the motor shaft to the basket shaft without any belt, pulley or gearbox in between. On a machine handling flammable products that matters more than it does elsewhere. A V-belt is a triboelectric generator — it builds and discharges static — and it also sheds rubber dust that can settle in the process zone and catch fire. Removing the belt removes both. Combined with a full flap cover that opens past 90 degrees and flameproof electricals, a direct drive centrifuge gives a machine that is both safer on solvent duty and easier to clean than a conventional belt-driven one.

Working Principle

1) Cover open, fit the medium. The full flap turns back beyond 90 degrees so the filter medium can be fitted and inspected. 2) Close and seal. The flap seals the process zone; nitrogen blanketing can be applied and verified. 3) Feed. Slurry is fed at a controlled rate into the basket. 4) Separate and wash. Liquid passes the medium while wash liquid displaces mother liquor from the cake. 5) Spin-dry. The direct-driven basket accelerates to the spin-dry speed; because there is no belt, speed is set precisely by the drive rather than by pulley ratio. 6) Discharge and clean. The flap opens fully and the cake is removed from above, with the whole interior exposed for cleaning.

Key Features

No belt, no belt dust — removing the V-belt removes the rubber debris that can accumulate in the process zone and ignite.

No triboelectric static source — the largest static generator on a belt-driven machine is the belt itself; a direct drive eliminates it.

No belt maintenance — no tensioning, no replacement, no belt slip at high torque, and no downtime from a snapped belt.

Precise speed control — basket speed follows the drive directly, so recipes reproduce exactly rather than depending on pulley wear.

Full flap access — the cover opens beyond 90 degrees, exposing the basket and casing completely for cleaning and inspection.

Built for hazardous duty — flameproof motor and panel, inerting, grounding and static-dissipating medium as a coordinated package.

Typical Applications

A direct drive centrifuge in explosion-proof execution is specified wherever the product is solvent-wet, where dust is combustible, or where both risks coincide — and where cleaning must still be straightforward:

  • solvent-wet pharmaceutical intermediates · pesticide technical · flammable dye intermediates · fine chemicals with solvent wash · petrochemical catalysts · flavor and fragrance · explosive or oxidizing solids · powder with low minimum ignition energy

Selection Guide

Hazardous duty can be met several ways. Compare what each machine removes from the ignition risk list:

Choose the PQZ direct drive centrifuge when ignition risk is the dominant concern and cleaning access still matters. Where the product is not flammable, the PQS version is cheaper and equally sanitary; where you run one toxic product in long campaigns, a sealed bottom discharge machine is the better fit.

FAQ

Why is a belt a problem on a centrifuge handling solvents?

A V-belt generates static charge as it runs and releases it in the process area, and it wears continuously, shedding rubber dust. Both are potential ignition sources when the product or the dust is flammable. A direct drive has neither the belt nor its dust, which makes the ignition-risk case far easier to argue.

Is a direct drive harder to maintain?

No, it is simpler. There is no belt to tension or replace and no pulley alignment to check. The motor is coupled directly to the basket shaft, so the main maintenance items in the drive train are the bearings and the coupling, both checked on a normal service schedule.

Does removing the belt change performance?

It improves repeatability. Basket speed is set directly by the drive rather than by a pulley ratio that shifts as the belt wears, so a stored recipe produces the same cycle every time. Torque transmission is also more direct, which helps during the heavy load of initial spin-up.

What zone classification can it be supplied for?

The motor, panel and instrumentation are selected to match the classification you specify for the installation area. Give us your area classification, gas group and temperature class, and we will confirm the electrical package against it.

Can it still be cleaned easily with the drive arrangement?

Yes. The full flap opens beyond 90 degrees, exposing the whole basket and casing, and the direct drive also removes the belt guard, which on a belt machine is another surface to clean around and inspect. Overall there is less to clean, not more.

Why Jiangsu Shengli Centrifuge

Jiangsu Shengli Centrifuge Manufacturing Co., Ltd. manufactures this range at its 158,905 m2 works, where the critical operations - machining, wear-facing and dynamic balancing - are carried out in house rather than subcontracted. The company is certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, holds CE marking and more than 30 patents, and exports to over 30 countries. Each machine is run-tested before dispatch and supplied with its balancing record.

Request a Quote or a Free Separation Test

Before you specify, send us your material. We test it on laboratory and pilot machines and report what the separation actually achieves, so the model we recommend is based on measurement rather than assumption. Include your target moisture or clarity figure and we will tell you honestly whether this machine can reach it.
